De DVS is aanwezig bij het International Viola Congress 2014 in Porto.

Zaterdag 29 november 2014
Natuurlijk begint onze dag weer met een repetitie voor Jeppe Moulijn, en het begint echt te klinken! Om kwart voor tien doen we nog een laatste doorloop en dan vanmiddag voor het eggie. Ik moet even pas op de plaats nemen en ga terug naar het hotel, slaap twee uur en studeer nog een beetje.
Samen met Emlyn lopen we terug naar het klooster en gaan luisteren naar de caprices van Atar Arad, uitgevoerd door de maestro himself. Wat een prachtige caprices. Ze hebben allemaal een voornaam van een componist die veel voor de altviool heeft betekend.
De volgende namen passeren de revue: Rebecca, William, Béla, George, Krzysztof, Johannes, Franz’, Paul, Benjamin, Robert, Wolfgang en de laatste is Unknown.
Atar Arad laat zien dat hij de meester is! Helaas kunnen we niet echt afscheid van hem nemen en hem eren, want hij heeft op het podium al zijn jas aan om het vliegtuig te halen.
Er is nog even tijd om wat organisatorische dingen te doen voor het volgende concert met allemaal mooie bewerkingen, die goed te gebruiken zijn voor toegiften en korte recitals.
De meeste stukken zijn bewerkt door Vadim Borisovsky:
Katsjaturian: Wals voor 2 altviolen en piano uit Lermontov’s drama “Masquerade”
Bulakhov: Barcarolle voor 2 altviolen en piano
Sjostakovitsj: Stukjes uit de film “The Gadfly”.
Glinka: Variaties op een thema uit het lied “The Nightingale” van Alabiev
Er komen nog een aantal stukken aan bod, maar die heb ik niet meer gehoord en ik geloof dat ik daar niet zoveel heb gemist.
En dan is het zover: We moeten op voor de première van onze (DVS) opdrachtscompositie “Secret Society” van Jeppe Moulijn, voor vier solo altviolen en groot altvioolensemble. Er wordt gauw opgebouwd en achter stemmen. Het orkest staat op het podium en de solisten achter de pilaren. Frank (Brakkee) dirigeert, en geeft aan wanneer welke solist al spelend opkomt.
Het wordt een groot succes, het publiek is laaiend enthousiast. Eugènie, de vrouw van Frank die gisteren ingevlogen is, maakt een opname met mijn iPad, en zo kunnen we het binnenkort ook trots op onze website zetten.

Het IVC 2014 Altvioolensemble neemt applaus in ontvangst na de premiere van het stuk “Secret Society”, een opdrachtscompositie van de DVS geschreven door de nederlandse componist Jeppe Moulijn (Foto credit: APVdA).
We lopen allemaal eerst terug naar het hotel, laten onze instrumenten daar achter en dan snel doorlopen naar de Casa da Musica. Daar begint het avondprogramma met dit keer het orkest van de masteropleiding.
Drie altvioolconcerten staan op het programma. Het eerste is van de Portugese componist Joly Braga Santos gespeeld door Mariana Blanc. Het meisje studeert waarschijnlijk aan het conservatorium hier. Ze is perfect voorbereid en laat goed horen waar het stuk over gaat. Mooi en goed gespeeld.
Dan het grote altvioolconcert van William Walton. De soliste is de Russisch/Duitse Tatjana Masurenko. Wat een performance! Als een leeuw(in) valt ze aan op het stuk. Jammer dat ze twee keer een black out kreeg, maar het publiek vergeeft haar ogenblikkelijk. Het is namelijk ongelofelijk muzikaal gespeeld. En we krijgen een toegift! Het derde en vierde deel uit de Hindemith opus 25 nr.1. Wat een durf. In het hol van de leeuw deze Hindemith spelen. De haren van de stok vliegen in het rond.
Wie zich ook in het hol van de leeuw heeft begeven, maar daar denk ik veel spijt van heeft gekregen, is de voorzitter van de IVS. Hij speelt met het orkest Harold in Italy van Berlioz.
We zitten nu aan een groot diner in een sjiek restaurant en drinken wijn. En hebben inmiddels de heerlijke Portugese soep gegeten.

Naturally our day starts with another rehearsal for the piece “Secret Society” by Jeppe Moulijn. It’s starting to sound really good! At 09:45am we do the last run-through, and then this afternoon it’s showtime! At this realization I feel the need for a little extra rest at the hotel. I sleep 2 more hours and then put in some personal study time.
Together with Emlyn we walk down to the festival site (the monastery) where we listen to the Caprices by Atar Arad, performed by the maestro himself. What beautiful pieces. They each bear the first name of a composer who has meant something for the viola: Rebecca, William, Béla, George, Krzysztof, Johannes, Franz’, Paul, Benjamin, Robert, Wolfgang – and the last name is “Unknown”. Atar Arad proves that he is a master! Alas we do not have the opportunity to praise him in person, as he is already wearing his jacket on stage so he can run off and catch his flight.
We have some time to do organizing tasks before the next concert, with a number of nice transcriptions for viola, very useful as encores and for short recitals etc. Most of the transcriptions are by Vadim Borisovsky:

A number of other pieces are on the programme, but I have to leave at this point and hope that I haven’t missed too much.
And then, finally, we’re on for our première of the DVS commissioned piece “Secret Society” by Jeppe Moulijn, for 4 solo violas and large viola ensemble. There is some quick stage set-up work and backstage tuning. The ensemble is on-stage and the soloists stand behind the columns. Frank (Brakkee) conducts, and indicates when each of the soloists enter stage, while playing.
It is a big success, the audience is very enthousiastic. Eugènie (Frank’s wife, who flew in yesterday), makes a recording with my iPad, so that we can post this on our website later on.
The evening programme in the Casa da Musica includes no less than 3 viola concertos.
The first is by the Portuguese composer Joly Braga Santos, performed by Mariana Blanc (from the conservatory here?). She is perfectly prepared, and conveys very well the essence of the piece. Beautiful and technically solid playing.
Next is the big viola concerto of William Walton. The soloist is the Russian/German Tatjana Masurenko. What a performance! She attacks the piece like a lion(ess). A pity that she gets lost twice, but the audience immediately forgives her: It is such an incredibly musical rendition. And we get an encore! The 3rd and 4th movements of Hidemith’s solo sonata op.25 no.1. Very gutsy to perform this Hindemith here, in the Lion’s den. Her bow hairs literally flurry all over the place.
Also braving a foray into the Lion’s den, but perhaps regretting it now, is the IVS president himself, who played the Berlioz’ “Harold in Italy”.
We are now seated for dinner in a nice restaurant, enjoying a sip of wine and some delicious Portuguese soup.
