De DVS is aanwezig bij het International Viola Congress 2014 in Porto.

Zondag 30 november 2014
Na een uurtje langer te hebben geslapen (het werd iedere nacht toch pas 01.30 voor we gingen slapen), verzamelen we bij het ontbijt. Daar praten we nog wat en wisselen adressen uit. Raquel (Portugal/Australië) biedt ons aan met haar mee te rijden richting Europark (een conferentieoord waar het congres vandaag wordt afgesloten), met ondertussen een sightseeing tour. Dat slaan Roald en ik niet af, en zo vertrekken we met stralend weer dwars door Porto via de Eiffelbrug naar de andere kant van de rivier. Daar parkeren we de auto en lopen langs de rivier en nog eens over de brug en drinken aan de andere kant in het zonnetje een kop koffie. We rijden verder naar de Atlantische oceaan met haar hoge golven. We lopen een stukje over het strand en ik zoek naar schelpen en stenen. Een kilometer of 7 verderop is een kerkje wat bij hoog water in de zee staat, maar nu met laag water te bereiken is. Het is zo mooi weer dat we in een hemd rondlopen.
Met een paar omwegen bereiken we Europark, waar de grote nationale happening plaats vindt voor altviool. En er staan inderdaad 400 altviolen van 5 tot 95 te spelen. Wat een geweldig gezicht is het. Dat is de nieuwe generatie altviolisten van Portugal. Dus Europa, maak je geen zorgen, er blijven genoeg altviolisten over. Wel allemaal uit Portugal 🙂

Het laatste concert en tevens afsluiting van het congres is met het orkest van de universiteit aangevuld met de Filarmonia das Beiras. Allemaal Portugese composities en één Amerikaanse compositie.
Het concert begon met een stuk voor orkest: Tres esbocos sinfonicos van Joly Braga Santos, wiens altvioolconcert we gisteren al hadden gehoord. Echt mooie muziek.
Daarna was het de beurt aan altviolist en componist Alexandre Delgado die zijn eigen altvioolconcert met bravoure speelde. Petje af. Het stuk Khroma van Claudio Carneyro is een grote positieve verrassing. Een geweldig stuk en geweldig uitgevoerd door Pedro Meireles.
En als laatste stuk mag mijn favoriete altvioliste Jutta Puchhammer het altvioolconcert van Tim Brady (een amerikaan, die ook het hele congres aanwezig was) spelen. Wat een geweldige altvioliste is Jutta. Alles to the point en muzikaal, mooie toon, en zo’n aardige en bevlogen altvioliste! Ik ben blij dat ze ook in het bestuur van de IVS zit. Jammer dat ze helemaal in Canada woont. Maar gelukkig slaat ze geen congres over, dus kunnen we ieder jaar van haar genieten.
We worden terug naar Porto met de bus gereden en in het centrum afgezet en nu eten we eens echt Portugees, hebben eindelijk tijd om te eten en komen in een geweldig restaurant met een heerlijke ober, die ons met humor door de Portugese keuken leidt. Het waren geweldige dagen, we zijn moe, maar hebben zoveel gehoord.

After having slept in for an extra hour (each night in Porto so far ended at 01:30am or later!), we gather for breakfast. We chat and exchange addresses. Raquel (Portugal/Australia) offers us a ride to Europark (the congress centre where today’s final event takes place), with some sightseeing along the way.
Roald and I gladly accept, and we depart with fantastic weather through the city of Porto, across the Eiffel bridge to the other river bank. There we park the car and stroll along the river for a while. We have a cup of coffee and then drive on to the Atlantic shore, with huge waves rolling in. We walk across the beach and I collect some nice seashells and stones. In the distance we see a church that becomes an island in the sea at high tide, but now can be reached by foot. The weather is warm enough to walk around in a shirt.
After a few more small detours we reach the Europark congress centre. Today the Portuguese National Viola Congress takes place here. And indeed there is an orchestra playing, consisting of some 400 violists aged 5 to 95. What a marvellous sight! This is the new generation of violists. So don’t worry Europe, we will have plenty of violists left in the future. Albeit mostly Portuguese ones :-).
The last concert and also the formal closing event of the Congress features the University orchestra, reinforced with the Filarmonia das Beiras.The programme consists almost entirely of Portuguese compositions (and one American piece).
The first work is an orchestra piece, Tres Esbocos sinfonicos by Joly Braga Santos, whose viola concerto we heard yesterday. Really beautiful music.
Next up was violist and composer Alexandre Delgado, performing his own viola concerto with much panache. Hats off! The piece Khroma by Claudio Carneyro is a big positive surprise: A great composition, expertly performed by Pedro Meireles.
And finally my favourite violist Jutta Puchhammer plays the viola concerto by Tim Brady (an American, who also was present for the whole IVC congress). Jutta is a great musician, everything is musically to the point, beautiful tone. And she’s such a nice and passionate violist! I am truly glad that she sits on the board of the IVS. Too bad that she lives so far away, in Canada. But fortunately she never misses an IVC, so we can enjoy meeting her in this context every time.
We ride back to Porto by bus, and now have a real Portuguese meal downtown. Finally there is ample time to eat, we are in a restaurant with a very friendly waiter, who guides us through the Portuguese cuisine with lots of humour.
These days in Porto were altogether wonderful, we are tired, but have heard so much. Warm thanks to our hosts, the Associação Portuguesa da Viola d’arco, for the organization and the amazing hospitality!
