Het 50e International Viola Congress (IVC) vond plaats van 19-23 Januari 2026 in Parijs. Met het thema “New Horizons: Celebrating Legacy and Diversity” had deze speciale jubileumseditie van het congres alles in zich om de rijke traditie van de International Viola Society te waarborgen en onze wereldwijde altviool-community bijeen te brengen.
De lijst van featured artists bevatte het artistieke neusje van de zalm uit de altvioolwereld, met grote kanonnen zoals Lawrence Power, Kim Kashkashian, Tabea Zimmermann, Garth Knox, Gérard Caussé, Tatjana Masurenko en Tim Ridout. De toewijding van gastvrouw Françoise Gnéri en haar team van de Société Française de l’Alto was werkelijk indrukwekkend. Zo’n 200 concerten, recitals, lezingen, workshops en masterclasses werden gegeven, een recordaantal!
Er waren tientallen nederlanders aanwezig onder de (naar schatting) 500 bezoekers, waaronder veel altvioolstudenten. De nederlanders gaven ook behoorlijke inhoudelijke bijdragen aan het congres:
- Emlyn Stam speelde twee recitals, waaronder de internationale première van het altvioolconcert “Ma vie en couleurs” van Martijn Padding, begeleid door het New European Ensemble;
- Roald van Os (HKU) presenteerde samen met Jörn Boysen (clavecimbel) de mede door hem opgerichte Historical Viola and Violin Society met een uitvoering van sonate nr.1 op.4 van Johannes Colizzi, volgens de principes van “Historically Informed Practice”. De presentatie vind je hier (link).
- Anna Jurriaanse speelde een recital met de naam “The Composers in my Life“, met 15 miniaturen voor altviool solo die speciaal voor haar waren gecomponeerd, waaronder bijdragen van de nederlandse componisten Amarante Nat, Joshua Herwig en Kaja Majoor.
- Yanna Pelser gaf een recital “The Singing Violist” met eigen composities, en leidde ook een workshop met de titel “Resonanzlehre – Sound/Body practice for violists“.
- Sylven van Sasse van Ysselt presenteerde een lezing/recital met de titel “Traditional Javanese Gamelan Sounds on the Contemporary Viola“, en presenteerde bovendien de “jeugdafdeling” van de IVS, “IuVentuS”.
- Karin Dolman componeerde, dirigeerde en regisseerde het muzikale toneelstuk “Raiders of the Lost Tone” dat werd uitgevoerd op de laatste dag van het congres, met zo’n 100 betrokken musici, dansers en acteurs. Paultje Klerx (Codarts) en Emlyn Stam speelden hierin hoofdrollen in het verhaal. Daarnaast vormde de altvioolklas van Francien Schatborn (CvA) samen met andere nederlandse conservatoriumstudenten een stevige basis voor het 50-koppige altvioolorkest, met Sunniva Skaug als concertmeester, en Elin Haver als soliste.

The 50th International Viola Congress (IVC) took place from January 19th-23rd, 2026 in Paris (France). With the theme “New Horizons: Celebrating Legacy and Diversity“, this landmark edition of the congress continued the rich tradition of the International Viola Society in bringing together our world-wide viola community.
The list of featured artists included many of the finest names from the viola world, with big guns such as Lawrence Power, Kim Kashkashian, Tabea Zimmermann, Garth Knox, Gérard Caussé, Tatjana Masurenko and Tim Ridout. The commitment of our host Françoise Gnéri and her team from the Société Française de l’Alto was truly impressive. Roughly 200 concerts, recitals, lectures, workshops and masterclasses were programmed – a record number!
There were dozens of Dutch attendants among the (estimated) 500 congress visitors, amongst which many conservatory students. Several members of the Dutch “delegation” gave significant contributions to the congress programme:
- Emlyn Stam played two recitals, including the international première of Martijn Padding‘s viola concerto “Ma vie en couleurs“, accompanied by the New European Ensemble;
- Roald van Os (HKU) presented the Historical Viola and Violin Society along with a performance of Johannes Colizzi’s sonata no.1 op.4, along the principles of “Historically Informed Practice”, accompanied by Jörn Boysen (harpsichord). The presentation can be found here (link).
- Anna Jurriaanse played a recital with the title “The Composers in my Life“, consisting of 15 solo viola miniatures composed especially for her. The Dutch composers in the list included Amarante Nat, Joshua Herwig and Kaja Majoor.
- Yanna Pelser gave a recital titled “The Singing Violist” with her own compositions, and also led a workshop called “Resonanzlehre – Sound/Body practice for violists“.
- Sylven van Sasse van Ysselt presented a lecture-recital with the title “Traditional Javanese Gamelan Sounds on the Contemporary Viola“, and also presented the youth chapter of the IVS, “IuVentuS”.
- Karin Dolman composed, conducted and directed the musical play “Raiders of the Lost Tone“, performed on the last day of the congress, with around 100 musicians, dancers and actors involved. Paultje Klerx (Codarts) and Emlyn Stam had leading roles in the play. Furthermore, Francien Schatborn’s viola class (CvA) and other Dutch conservatory students formed a solid basis for the 50 members viola orchestra, with Sunniva Skaug as concertmaster and Elin Haver as a soloist.
