The Timothy Ridout Masterclass 2023 is a cooperation between the DVS and the Conservatory of Amsterdam. The DVS will have the opportunity to select and sponsor one or two participants for the Masterclass given by Timothy Ridout on February 15th, 2023 in Amsterdam. For this opportunity, we have organized an open application process.
The following Terms and Conditions apply to all Applicants for the DVS Timothy Ridout Masterclass 2023. Please read it thoroughly. 1. DEFINITIONS
1.1. DVS refers the Dutch Viola Society.
1.2. Application refers to the act of filling in and submitting the DVS Timothy Ridout Masterclass 2023 Application Form.
1.3. A Masterclass Candidate is a person who is Applying for the DVS Timothy Ridout Masterclass 2023 participation. Candidacy is confirmed by a mail acknowledging receipt of the application.
1.4. The Masterclass Participant is a person who has Applied for Masterclass participation and has been selected by the DVS Masterclass selection committee.
2. MASTERCLASS APPLICATION
2.1. In order to be considered for selection, the Candidate must be maximum 26 years of age on the day of the Masterclass (i.e. born on or after 16/02/1996).
2.2. The Candidate shall either currently be enrolled in, or recently have completed, a degree (Bachelor / Master) in Viola performance at a Dutch Conservatory. Regardless of the Candidate’s nationality, the DVS wishes to assign this Masterclass to a student with a certain affinity to the Dutch viola community.
2.3. The Candidate shall submit a short personal Biography (in Dutch or English) of maximum 400 words. This document shall be uploaded in PDF or MS Word format through the Application form..
2.4. The Candidate shall upload a recent headshot photo, not more than 3 years old. The file format must be full-colour JPEG or PNG, minimum resolution 600×600 pixels.
2.5. The Candidate shall submit a link to a video recording of his/her viola playing. The video must conform to the following rules:
- The video must be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo or similar online streaming service, or to a file sharing platform (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneCloud, iCloud…).
- The link itself shall allow anyone in possession of the link to view the video (i.e. link sharing). No specific user login shall be required of the viewer.
- The video must remain persistently available through the given link until at least February 15th, 2022.
- The video must have been recorded in the past 12 months (earliest 01/01/2022).
- Minimum length of video: 4 minutes
- Maximum length of video: 7 minutes (indicative), however if the video is longer than 7 minutes, the candidate shall indicate at which time offset to start viewing (for a maximum of 7 minutes).
- The video shall allow to clearly recognize the candidate’s face (when compared to the headshot photo, see 2.4 above)
- The video shall allow an unobstructed view of the candidate’s face, arms and hands.
- The video shall be a continuous shot without edits
- Preferably, the video should exhibit the repertoire that the candidate proposes to play in the Masterclass, or a related/similar piece (e.g. same composer or style)
2.6. The Candidate has to be present and available to play for the whole afternoon of the Masterclass (February 15th 2023, between 1500-1800h).
2.7. The DVS ensures that a piano and a professional pianist (with knowledge of the viola repertoire) are available at no extra cost on the Masterclass day. There will be limited (at best) opportunity to rehearse with the pianist in advance. Candidates who do not need a pianist, or who wish to bring their own pianist, must indicate this in the Application form.
2.8. The Application Form must be submitted no later than Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at 24:00h (Amsterdam time, CET)
3. SELECTION AND SCHEDULING
3.1. Incomplete applications (missing or invalid attachments, missing or falsified information) will be rejected by the Selection Commiittee.
3.2. The Masterclass Selection committee of the DVS will complete selections by February 5th, 2023. All Candidates will be informed of their status by e-mail, as soon as possible after this decision.
3.3. The selected DVS Masterclass Participant shall accept any time slot assigned to him/her (between 15:00h and 18:00h).
3.4. The DVS cannot guarantee that the time or location will not change. The Participant is expected to exercise maximum flexibility with respect to changing time and location of the assigned masterclass.
3.5. A limited number of candidates will be admitted to a reserve list, which will be used to appoint replacements in case the initially selected Participants become unavailable for any reason. The Reserve list candidates will be notified of their ranked place on the list by the selection committee.
4. FINANCIAL CONDITIONS
4.1. There is no Application Fee. You can become an official Masterclass Candidate at zero cost.
4.2. The (selected) Participant will owe a one-time Masterclass fee of €50,- to be paid to the DVS Bank account by February 15th, 2023. The DVS Bank account number is available on the DVS Contact Page. Note: This amount only covers a part of the actual fee; the DVS sponsors the remainder of the fee.
4.3. In case the Participant prefers to use his/her own pianist for accompaniment, the Participant is responsible for covering the fees / reimbursements of the pianist.
5. CANCELLATION
5.1. In the unfortunate event that the Participant should be(come) unavailable for the assigned Masterclass, he/she has to notify the DVS as soon as possible by sending a cancellation by e-mail to mail@dutchviolasociety.nl.
6. HEALTH AND SAFETY REGULATIONS
6.1. The selected Participants must adhere to the Dutch Covid-19 regulations and advice as stated on https://www.government.nl/topics/coronavirus-covid-19 during the masterclass.
6.2. Any complementary house rules regarding Covid-19 at the Masterclass venue shall be respected by the Participants.
7. GENERAL REGULATIONS
7.1. Decisions of the DVS Timothy Ridout Masterclass 2023 Selection committee are final; there is no possibility to appeal these decisions.
7.2. In case of infringement of these Terms and Conditions, DVS reserves the right to refuse or cancel the Participant’s assignment.
7.3. In case of reasonable doubt, all questions not answered by these Terms and Conditions are subject to the decision of the President of the DVS.
